Covid-19 and California Causing Havoc for San Francisco 49ers
Covid-19 is no joke, and the pandemic is far from over. The virus and the State of California are causing havoc for the San Francisco 49ers. Many try to undermine the virus and its effects. The world of sports has been greatly affected by this pandemic, to the point where a few months ago every single major league from around the world was stopped and we didn’t know if we would be able to watch another game anytime soon.
However, little by little all these leagues started finding their own ways to come back, and we were lucky enough to catch a break and finally get to enjoy our favorite teams and games again, under different protocols and systems, of course, but we got sports after all, and that’s what matters.
The NFL was lucky enough to be the last one of the major American leagues to start, and without the need to adjust calendars or delay the regular season.
However, after a few weeks of activity, we started getting some positive Covid cases in different teams, and this has caused this season to be completely atypical, having to postpone some of the games, or having to see teams play without some of their best players because they have been infected, or at least in contact with someone who was.
The league even started to let fans back in stadiums in small numbers, of course, but as Covid-19’s second wave hits the world and the United States included, things are starting to get a bit complicated again.
One of the teams that is facing tough times ahead in this season is the San Francisco 49ers, as Santa Clara County, which is where Levi’s Stadium is located, has recently announced that all contact sports will be temporarily prohibited, at least until December 21st. The official statement says:
“Professional, Collegiate and Youth Sports:
All recreational activities that involve physical contact or close proximity to persons outside one’s household, including all contact sports, will be temporarily prohibited. People can continue to engage in outdoor athletics and recreation where social distancing can be maintained at all times”.
What this means for the 49’ers is that they will have to find an alternate venue to play their home games at until that date. They had games scheduled at Levi’s Stadium for December 7th against the Buffalo Bills, and December 13th against the Washington Football Team. Plus, if this measure would extend for any reason, their las game of the season, against the Seattle Seahawks on January 3rd, could also be in danger.
The 49ers visited the LA Rams on week 12 and got away with an important 23-20 win, to bring their overall record up to 5-6, which is still not good at all. No need to say how important the next games are for the team if they want to be able to fight for a playoff spot.
Other than the Bills, Washington, and Seahawks at “home”, the Niners also must visit the Dallas Cowboys on week 15, and the Arizona Cardinals on week 16. Needless to say, that the team is basically forced to win all games to be able to catch up with the best in their division, Seattle Seahawks and their 7-3, and the LA Rams 7-4, after losing to the 49ers.
Will San Francisco make the playoffs this season? It’s certainly looking tough right now, but there is still enough season to go!
