Two of the biggest thoroughbred horse racing meets of the year will soon take place. On Friday, July 10, Del Mar starts their summer meet.

Then on Thursday, July 16, Saratoga starts their meet. Nicknamed “The Spa”, Saratoga offers stakes races every day of their summer gathering.

Del Mar and Saratoga should attract massive racebook betting action. Year-in and year-out, summer racing at Del Mar and Saratoga offers the top horses, trainers, and jockeys.

Where the top connections in horse racing go, betting on horses follows.

Check out more information on both upcoming meets. With the NBA and MLB both returning later in the month, bookies can use racebook wagering as a nice warm-up to the return of traditional sports.

Previewing horse racing wagering action at Del Mar

Horseplayers know Del Mar as “Where the Turf Meets the Surf”. The racetrack sits on the Del Mar Fairgrounds in Del Mar, California.

Legendary crooner Bing Crosby wanted a place where he could hang out with his friends. Crosby was a huge horse racing fan.

He didn’t want to go to Santa Anita. Thoroughbred racing doesn’t happen in Palm Springs.

So, Crosby got some money together, including some from Jimmy Durante, and they built Del Mar Racetrack.

That happened back in 1936. Since that time, Del Mar has become a California version of the famous Keeneland Racetrack in Kentucky.

Santa Anita is the Churchill Downs of California. Del Mar is the Golden State’s Keeneland.

Del Mar’s summer meet runs from July 10 through September 7. The track will run 38 stakes races in total.

21-of-38 races are graded events. Check out a list of the Grade 1 events, along with race dates, Del Mar will run this summer.

Wagering on horse events at Saratoga should explode on August 1 and August 8. The eighth is the biggest day of the entire Saratoga race meet.

That day, “The Spa” runs the Travers Stakes.

What makes the Travers Stakes special?

In standard years the Travers Stakes serves as a fourth Triple Crown race. Dubbed the “Mid-Summer Derby”, the Travers serves as the bridge from the Belmont Stakes to the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

3-year-olds that win a Triple Crown race and the Travers are often the best of their generation.

But in 2020, that formula has gotten turned on its head. This year the Travers will serve as a prep for the September 5 Kentucky Derby.

Tiz the Law, the 2020 Belmont Stakes winner and Kentucky Derby favorite, will run in the August 8 Travers Stakes. “The Law” has a chance to sweep all 3 Triple Crown races, the Travers, and the Breeders’ Cup Classic because this is such a strange year for horse racing.

That will be an incredible feat. If you decide to promote the Travers Stakes, name drop Tiz the Law.
